Camel rides in Morocco are a walk through legend and history

Updated: Apr 7, 2023

For thousands of years, camels have been a significant part of North African culture. They were essential as a form of transportation in antiquity, and in more rural parts of Morocco today, they still are.

These gorgeous animals are revered throughout Morocco. Its leather is frequently tanned and used to produce prayer mats. A camel's hair can be converted into incense to alleviate nosebleeds.

According to some Moroccans, a camel is the only conscious animal capable of seeing the Djinn, the supernatural beings referenced in the Qur'an who coexist with mankind and angels.

What's the difference between a camel and a dromedary?

It's debatable whether or not there are camels in Morocco. This is because Moroccan camels only have one, unlike conventional camels, which have two humps on their backs.

Therefore, in Morocco, camels are known as dromedaries, a member of the camel family. Rarely do dromedary camels (Camelus dromedaries) roam free; most of them are accompanied by owners. It's common to observe herds that haven't fully been domesticated, but they still follow their nomadic owners from one feeding area to another.

Is it safe to ride a camel on my trip to Morocco?

Dromedaries have a reputation for being extremely hostile and obstinate creatures. However, this only applies to the herd's leader. They will turn hostile if they believe the pack is in danger or under threat. Most of the time, these are patient, clever, and compassionate creatures.

Are dromedary camels native to Morocco?

Although Australia is home to the sole population of completely wild dromedary camel herds, these animals are initially from northern Africa. They have incredibly hairy ears and long, thick eyelashes that shield their eyes and ears from the sand.

How long does a camel live?

Camel lifespans range from twenty-five to fifty years, and full-grown camels can reach heights of six to seven feet. The Dromedaries are revered by their owners and neighbors for their noble dispositions and capacity to live in the desert with little food and water. They can raise their body heat, which gives them the astonishing capacity to endure the desert heat.
